It’s Past Time to Banish Iran’s Monsters

Iran's President, Ebrahim Raisi, calls the rage unfolding in his country over the death of 22- year-old Kurdish woman Mahsa Amini, “acts of chaos” that must be stopped. What must be stopped are anachronistic, clueless old men keeping their country in the dark ages, subjugating their people, and tormenting their women while hijacking their religion.

The country’s 83-year-old, ailing Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei on 9/16 spoke about the 1980-88 Iran-Iraq war and urged “the need to teach young Iranians about the conflict and for them not to fall for Western powers’ deception.”

He did not mention the brutalities his “morality police” have been unleashing on women and the ugly consequences of Mahsa Amini’s death in which 130 civilians have died, including the 17-year-old school girl Nika Shakrami.

What drives these out-of-touch, robe-clad men who evoke dystopian, unmade, low-budget sci-fi films from the 50s to be stuck in their antediluvian ways? Power, fear, misogyny, hatred, senility, depression, repression, frustration. Western politics and sanctions have not helped. In 2015, I produced a documentary on young artists and activists fighting tyranny in Iran. It’s still relevant today, and provides an eye-opening history of modern Iran and its decades of discontent.

I admire the courageous women of Iran and the men supporting them. Iranians have mastered the art of subversive protest, couched in art, film and music. But taking to the streets in Iran means exposing yourself to violence, torture, and death. Across the country, thousands of women and girls have braved the violence to voice their rage, burning headscarves and cutting their hair to protest against the gender apartheid in Iran.

While high profile women and men around the world have supported Iranian women’s fight against oppression, the highest profile women activists in the USA like Michele Obama, Oprah and Kamala Harris, are notably silent. A post from French-Iranian actress Golshifteh Farahani on IG that tags these ladies, sums it up:

“What good is it to be Women’s Rights advocate if you are silent on one of the biggest Women’s Rights movements in our lifetime?”

Iranian and Persian culture is ancient, rich, sophisticated, and beautiful. Every time I encounter Its art or meet its people, I ache for the country to reopen to the world. One of the great tragedies of our times is Iran being left out of the global narrative and demonized because of its troglodyte men masquerading as leaders and saints.

The world needs Iran without its monsters. The USA, and the world should amplify the voices of Iranian women and assertively help in their struggle. We should pressure our governments and businesses to force Iranian leadership to stop brutalizing its women and disband its laughable morality police.

Long live the memory of Mahsa Amini and all the other women and men killed in this fight, and more power to the brave people of her country fighting for change.

زمان طرد کردن هیولهای ایران گذشته است

چه چیزی باعث می‌شود این مردان بی‌خبر و روپوش‌پوش که فیلم‌های علمی تخیلی دیستوپیایی، ساخته نشده و کم‌هزینه دهه 50 را تداعی می‌کنند، در شیوه‌های پیش از غبار خود گیر کنند؟ قدرت، ترس، زن ستیزی، نفرت، پیری، افسردگی، سرکوب، سرخوردگی. سیاست غرب و تحریم ها کمکی نکرده است.

در سال 2015 مستندی درباره هنرمندان و فعالان جوان در حال مبارزه با استبداد در ایران تهیه کردم. این موضوع امروز هم مطرح است و تاریخ چشم‌نوازی از ایران مدرن و دهه‌ها نارضایتی آن را ارائه می‌کند.

من زنان شجاع ایران و مردان حامی آنها را تحسین می کنم. ایرانیان بر هنر اعتراض براندازانه، هنر، فیلم و موسیقی مسلط شده اند. اما حضور در خیابان ها در ایران به معنای قرار گرفتن در معرض خشونت، شکنجه و مرگ است. در سراسر کشور، هزاران زن و دختر در اعتراض به آپارتاید جنسیتی در ایران، در اعتراض به آپارتاید جنسیتی در ایران، با سوزاندن روسری و کوتاه کردن موهای خود خشم خود را ابراز کرده اند.

فرهنگ ایرانی و ایرانی کهن، غنی، پیچیده و زیباست. هر بار که با هنر آن روبرو می شوم یا مردم آن را ملاقات می کنم، دلم می خواهد که کشور دوباره به روی جهان باز شود. یکی از تراژدی‌های بزرگ روزگار ما این است که ایران از روایت جهانی کنار گذاشته شده و به دلیل مردان تروگلودیتش که خود را به عنوان رهبران و قدیس‌ها درآورده‌اند، شیطانی شده است.

جهان بدون هیولاهایش به ایران نیاز دارد. آمریکا و جهان باید صدای زنان ایرانی را تقویت کنند و قاطعانه به مبارزه آنها کمک کنند. ما باید دولت ها و شرکت های خود را تحت فشار قرار دهیم تا رهبری ایران را مجبور کنند که از خشونت علیه زنان خود دست بردارد و پلیس اخلاق خنده دار خود را منحل کند.

یاد و خاطره مهسا امینی و تمام زنان و مردان کشته شده در این مبارزه زنده باد و قدرت بیشتر برای مردم شجاع کشورش که برای تغییر مبارزه می کنند.
