We Are Still Colonized by The British

The long and magnificent goodbye to Queen Elizabeth II was incredibly moving and momentous.

I lived my early life in post-colonial India under her glittering shadow. Her Majesty was indeed a gracious, omnipresent lady, and her service to Britain and the Commonwealth is inspiring and unprecedented. Britain was fortunate to have her wear the crown as the Empire crumbled and the country itself shriveled into a satire. She might have been the saving grace of the United Kingdom these past 70 years and 214 days.

But our obsession with the monarchy, our unholy devotion to the “Royal Family” says a lot about our society and ourselves. Apparently we are so empty and joyless, so devoid of heroes, aspiration, romance, glory, chivalry, and self-respect that we remain enslaved to an unrepentant institution responsible for untold cruelty, exploitation, plunder, genocide, oppression and misery. So smitten are we with this criminal enterprise we would easily surrender if they came for our countries, our riches, our miserable lives again.

It’s ironic that even as the wounds caused by the British Empire still fester and bleed, we remain hypnotized by the monarchy, servile to its circus, perpetually transfixed by the theater of the House of Windsor. The world burns and millions still suffer because of the British Empire, but we are still watching the Royal soap opera, our eyelids stapled to our heads, drugged and lobotomized.

The Queen is gone. I’m sure she deserved the mindblowing, relentless pageantry. But we, the descendants of the oppressed shouldn’t be obliged to mourn and glorify the oppressor. And the British monarchy, and all who believe in its past excesses shouldn’t still be colonizing our hearts and minds and our media.

लेकिन राजशाही के प्रति हमारा जुनून, "शाही परिवार" के प्रति हमारी अपवित्र भक्ति हमारेसमाज और हमारेबारेमेंबहुत कु छ कहती है। जाहिरा तौर पर हम इतनेखाली और आनंदहीन हैं, नायकों, आकांक्षाओ ं, रोमांस, महिमा, शिष्टता और आत्म-सम्मान से रहित हैंकि हम एक ऐसी अपरिवर्तनीय संस्था के गुलाम बनेरहतेहैं जो अनकही क्रूरता, शोषण, लूट, नरसंहार, उत्पीड़न और दुख के लिए जिम्मेदार है। तो हम इस आपराधिक उद्यम के साथ आहत हैं हम आसानी सेआत्मसमर्पण कर देंगेयदि वेहमारेदेशों, हमारेधन, हमारेदयनीय जीवन के लिए फिर सेआए।

यह विडंबना हैकि भलेही ब्रिटिश साम्राज्य के घाव अभी भी मुरझाए हुए हैंऔर खून बह रहा है, हम राजशाही द्वारा सम्मोहित रहतेहैं, इसके सर्कस के दास, हाउस ऑफ विंडसर के थिएटर द्वारा स्थायी रूप सेट्रांसफिक्स्ड। दुनिया जलती हैऔर लाखों लोग अभी भी ब्रिटिश साम्राज्य के कारण पीड़ित हैं, लेकिन हम अभी भी रॉयल सोप ओपेरा देख रहेहैं, हमारी पलकेंहमारेसिर सेचिपकी हुई हैं, नशा और लोबोटोमाइज्ड।

रानी चली गई। मुझेयकीन हैकि वह मन-उड़ानेवाली, अथक तमाशा की हकदार थी। लेकिन हम, उत्पीड़ितों के वंशजों को शोक करनेऔर अत्याचारी की महिमा करनेके लिए बाध्य नहीं होना चाहिए। और ब्रिटिश राजशाही, और सभी जो इसकी पिछली ज्यादतियों मेंविश्वास करतेहैं, उन्हेंअभी भी हमारेदिल और दिमाग और हमारेमीडिया का उपनिवेश नहीं करना चाहिए।
