African Art Is On Fire
In my wanderings in Africa I've discovered the continent itself is an electric, ever-morphing, seething, burning, cooling, evolving work of art. Its history, geography, wild diversity and unresolved social and political tensions, not to mention staggering racial inequity make it a fertile environment for some of the boldest and most groundbreaking art I’ve seen this year.
There is a revolution of art happening here. Watch out for these names amongst others, as they will be (and some already are) icons of the art world of the future: Penny Siopis, Kudzunai Chiurai, Thania Petersen, Zanele Muholi, Athi-Patra Ruga, Cyrus Kabiru, Leonce Raphael Agbodgelou and Ruby Swinney
This mixed media, printed and embroidered piece is by South African artist Thania Petersen.
